Prison Dental Services

There are currently over 150 prisons in the United Kingdom and more are planned
to be opened in the next few years. Therefore it is highly possible that you live in a commutable distance from at least one prison.

There are different categories of prisons ranging from open prisons to maximum
security prisons. The largest houses around 1500 prisoners and the smallest around 200. More information can be found on: www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk.

Working in a prison as a dental professional is very rewarding. Usually there are no UDA's to achieve and no laboratory costs to pay. A normal working day consists of two 3 - 3.5 hour sessions. However in most prisons it is only possible to work part time (1-3 days a week).

The dental treatments carried out in prisons are mainly fillings and extractions with occasional root canal treatments and crowns.
